Westerby Group present the Westerby Assam Cup to the winners of this thrilling Rutland Polo Club tournament

July 4, 2018

Leicester-based Westerby Group Managing Director Steve Harvey presented the Westerby Assam Cup to this year’s winning team at the Rutland Polo Club on Sunday 1 July.

The Westerby Assam Cup is part of the national Victor Ludorum competition, which is played at different handicap levels. There were 8 teams from across the country who keenly fought to reach the final of this prestigious trophy. The teams that reached the final were Specsavers and Summit, with Specsavers coming out the eventual winners by 4 goals to 3.

The thrilling tournament saw teams play under sunny skies watched by a large crowd of spectators who took part in this year’s ‘Picnic at the Polo’ event.

More than 200 guests also enjoyed lunch in a charity marquee at the invitation of one of Rutland Polo Club’s founders and Vice President, Edwin de Lisle and General Sir Timothy Granville-Chapman, Chairman and Director of the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC), this year’s chosen charity. The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, opened the proceedings with a welcoming speech.

A charity auction and donations raised a very substantial sum which will be Rutland Polo Club’s contribution towards the £300m being raised for building this world class Rehabilitation Centre near Loughborough that was opened last month by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Cambridge. At the opening The Prime Minister, Theresa May accepted the centre on behalf of the nation.

Steve Harvey, Managing Director of Westerby Group said: “Sunday’s Westerby Assam Cup tournament was a superb event with thrilling polo and brilliant weather, combined with the wonderful generosity of people who raised an impressive amount of money for the DNRC charity. We would like to thank Rutland Polo Club who organised such a fine tournament and the supporters who came along for what proved to be a perfect day.”
Edwin de Lisle said: “Thanks to everyone’s hard work and generosity this will be one of the most successful Charity Polo Lunches ever held at Rutland Polo Club”.
